In a significant move to position India at the forefront of technological innovation, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled the Union Budget 2025-26, highlighting a robust investment in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and deep tech sectors. Central to this initiative is the establishment of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in AI for education, backed by a ₹500 crore allocation. This CoE aims to revolutionize learning by developing personalized education models, automated assessments, and AI-driven tutoring systems. Collaborations with premier educational institutions, research bodies, and private enterprises are envisioned to tailor AI solutions specifically for the educational landscape.
Building upon previous commitments, the government is expanding its AI research infrastructure. The newly announced CoE for education complements the existing three CoEs dedicated to agriculture, health, and sustainable cities, underscoring a comprehensive strategy to integrate AI across vital sectors.
Recognizing the transformative potential of deep technologies, the budget proposes a ₹20,000 crore allocation to foster private sector-driven research, development, and innovation. Additionally, a Deep Tech Fund of Funds is set to be explored, aiming to catalyze the next generation of startups in areas such as AI, robotics, blockchain, biotechnology, and quantum computing.
To bridge the skill gap and prepare the workforce for emerging industries, five National Centers of Excellence for Skilling will be established. These centers will focus on curriculum development, training of trainers, certification frameworks, and regular assessments, ensuring that India’s youth are equipped with the necessary skills to thrive in a digitally driven economy.
These initiatives reflect India’s strategic commitment to harnessing AI and deep technologies, aiming to drive innovation, enhance educational outcomes, and position the nation as a global leader in the digital age.
